Sonja Shirey : I started my career in the health and safety field in 1984 as a 911 emergency dispatcher for the North Slope Borough Police Department in Barrow Alaska. My dispatch area encompassed the entire 88,000 square miles of the north slope including Barrow and it’s seven sister villages. For several years I worked closely with local fire, EMS and search and rescue agencies as a dispatcher and evidence technician. In 1989, I became a volunteer EMT responding to medical emergencies via ambulance, search and rescue helicopter and fixed wing aircraft. In 1991 I made the leap into full time EMS provider and began working with the department of health and social services EMS program as an instructor and later became the Training Coordinator for the Northern Region EMS Office. In 1994 my husband Dan and I moved out of Barrow and relocated in Anchorage. Not wanting to get out of the teaching realm, we formed a company called EMCI, Emergency Medical Contractors, INC. which later became known as Multi-Med. I am currently employed as a HSE Safety Advisor and EMT-III. I have earned my national certification as a Safety Trained Supervisor through the Council on Certification of Health, Environmental and Safety Technologist (CCHEST). I am currently studying for my Occupational Health and Safety Tech (OHST) certification and hope to offer safety education through MultiMed in the near future.

Dan Shirey : In 1970, I enlisted in the United States Coast Guard and was trained as a scuba diver and Motor Lifeboat skipper, providing search and rescue services on the Oregon and Washington coasts. I was also certified as a firefighter and EMT I. In 1974, when my enlistment was up, I became a police officer in Yakima, Washington where I continued my role in emergency medical services and became a scuba training officer for Yakima County police and underwater forensic teams. In 1983 I accepted a position on the North Slope Borough Department of Public Safety in Barrow, Alaska where I met my lovely wife Sonja. We have both been actively involved in security, safety and medical services since then. As long time instructors and active EMS first responders we have the knowledge to provide a unique training module and the experience to back it up. I am currently employed as a security officer and EMT-III in Prudhoe Bay and work a two week on, two week off schedule. My wife and I enjoy the same work rotation and can customize our classes for Multi-Meds clients because of our work flexibility.
